Nursing ProgramsNursing professions can be divided into registered nursing (RN), licensed practical nursing/ licensed vocational nursing (LPN/LVN), and nursing assistants. While nursing assistants are not true nurses, they are valuable aides to both nursing types. Registered nurses manage LPNs, LVNs, and nursing assistants while LPNs and LVNs work under the guidance of doctors and RNs. All of these professions can be classified further by specialty. These include travel nursing, hospital nursing, mental health nursing and more.
Registered NursesAs the largest profession in the healthcare field, registered nurses perform many duties including treating patients, performing tests, administer treatment and assist with follow ups. Most RNs work within hospitals. There are a couple of different paths to becoming registered nurse. The longest path is receiving a Bachelor's of Science degree in nursing (BSN). This course takes about 4 years for completion. Another option is to receive an Associate's degree in nursing (ADN). This program usually takes around 2 - 3 years and can be taken at a community college. Also, some hospitals offer diploma programs which last around 3 years. Finally, there has been an emergence of online nursing degree programs. These flexible programs provide working individuals the opportunity to take classes from home. After completion of any of these programs, all students are required to pass a national licensing examination (NCLEX-RN) to receive a nursing license. Licensed Practical and Licensed Vocational NursesLPNs and LVNs aide people that are ill or injured with the help of registered nurses and physicians. This is done by taking vital signs, giving injections, assisting with personal hygiene and more. To become a LPNs or LVNs, completing a year long training program usually given at vocational/technical schools and community colleges is required. In addition, students need to pass the NCLEX-PM to become licensed. The job outlook for all types of nurses is very good. It is expected that there will be a large number of job openings as seasoned nurses retire. This profession is expected to grow much faster than all other average occupations.
